Wendy Franks, Founder & CEO
Wendy has 20 years of experience in principal investing and business building across multiple technologies and jurisdictions within the renewable energy and clean technology sectors globally. She was formerly the Chief Strategy Officer, Head of Hydrogen and New Initiatives at Northland Power, where she successfully built the battery storage business. Wendy led to full financing and construction of the Oneida battery storage project, the largest battery storage project in Canada ($800 million of capital, 250MW), partnered with NRStor and Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corp, and with funding from the Canada Infrastructure Bank ($535 million). Over the past two years, she was building the hydrogen business at Northland including the evaluation of several prominent green hydrogen projects currently under development on the east coast of Canada. She currently serves on the Canada Electricity Advisory Council supporting the Federal government on how best to develop a low-carbon, reliable and affordable electricity grid.
Prior to Northland, she was Senior Principal, Relationship Investments at the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board where she managed a $4 billion investment portfolio spanning both private and public equity. Wendy served on the boards of Renew Power, one of the largest renewable power companies in India and Essential Utilities, an NYSE-listed water and natural gas utility. Before that, she was an Associate Principal at McKinsey & Company focused on risk management and corporate and investment banking.
Wendy holds a PhD in Bioelectronics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Zurich, Switzerland) in addition to degrees in chemical and electrical engineering (University of Waterloo).
